Education News in Nigeria

Four officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Education have been arrested over alleged fraud of about N200 million in the payment of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees for students in its secondary schools.

Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Taiwo Adeoluwa, who confirmed the development, said the incident was disturbing, considering the position given to the sector in the five cardinal programmes of the administration.
WAEC
“This is a disturbing development. Education is number one on the five-cardinal programmes of our administration and that is why we are investing so much to rebuild the sector.  Officials who think they can divert funds meant for this important sector are in for a surprise. Anybody, who is implicated in this scam will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
It was learnt that the fraud spanned at least three academic sessions, and that four officials, two men and two women are already in police net, and are aiding the police in the on-going investigation into the matter. It was also gathered that other suspects are being investigated for their roles in the fraud.
Our correspondent reports that preliminary investigation by the police showed that the fraudulent practices were perpetrated through inflation of the list of candidates in public schools, thereby making the state government to pay for candidates from private schools or tutorial centres.

Unconfirmed reports have it that four students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State might have lost their lives, Monday, as hundreds of them went on the rampage, protesting against the barring  of  unregistered students  from  participating in the harmattan examination, which should have started Monday.

The students used two of the student union government buses to barricade the road leading to the entrance of the institution, preventing  staff and other students from gaining entry into the main campus.

Police deny killing 4 students
The Police in the state, however, denied the alleged killing of four students in the protest, saying, only 10 were arrested.
The Assistant Police Commissioner in charge of Operations, Mr. Mohammad Abdulkadri, confirmed that 10 suspected rioters had been arrested and two buses seized from them with no casualty.
Vanguard gathered that the students rejected the appeal by Abdulkadri and Ijebu Area Commander, Usman Alabi, to shelve the planned action and allow movement in and outside the main campus.
The situation caused a stampede at the main gate as police fired tear gas to disperse the protesting students.
It would be recalled that the school authority, Sunday, through a statement from the state government, directed all bonafide students of the institution’s to regularize their studentship with immediate effect.
VC reacts
Speaking with newsmen, the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Saburi Adesanya, said the regularization was in line with the Federal Government’s directive through the National Universities Commission, NUC, requesting all universities to provide a comprehensive students‘ audit within the next six weeks.
Adesanya added that the only way to achieve this was to compile the list of bonafide students who had been dully registered through payment of school fees.
He said: “The protesting students were those who failed to meet the deadline of Friday, May 17 to comply with the instruction before the commencement of 500 level Law students.
“The deadline has before now shifted for more than three times to allow them complete their registration which some of them refuse to do.”
…SUG leader too
Reacting on behalf of the  Students Union Government, Vice President of the Union  OOU, Ajayi  Oyindamola, said they had been on the struggle with the institution for extension of the deadline for the past three months.
She explained that the students acknowledged the step of the institution over the regularization issue, but added that the closure of the school portal for payment and generation of receipt made things difficult for them.
Oyindamola further claimed that  the SUG  had  pleaded on behalf of the affected students who have not paid their school fees for 2010/2011, 2011/2012,and 2012/2013 academic sessions  for more extension due to the present economic situation of the country which did not go well with the school management.
She confirmed that some of the students hade spent four, five, six years and more in the institution as a result of their inability to pay the outrageous school fees.
She said: “It’s not right for students not to register for a particular session but most of them fend for the school fees themselves and even Ogun State government makes things difficult by not paying us bursary allowance.”
The SUG leader, however, said teargas canisters were fired by the police to disperse the protesters, adding that death or injury of any of them could not be ascertained as the police did not fire gun shots at any student.
The students who were sent away from the scene of the protest returned to the Ago-Iwoye township to regroup and made bone fires  along the streets, disrupting vehicular movements of other law-abiding residents of the community.

Over 160 Nigerian students who are on the federal government scholarship in Russia are now begging to survive due to lack the non-payment of their allowances in the last six months, it was revealed yesterday.

This revelation was made yesterday by the leader of the Association of the Federal Government Doctoral Candidates in Russia, Godwin Ezinkwo, during an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora Affairs.
Ezinkwo who stated that there are about 150 under graduate and 10 post-graduate students currently studying in Russia on the FG scholarship said that this is the worst form of scholarship by the Nigerian government.
Ezinkwo informed the committee that for six months now, they have not been paid their allowances, a situation that made them to beg their counterparts from other African countries like Ghana, Zimbabwe and the rest for assistance.
He said that the students also suffer in terms of accommodation because most of them are yet to pay for their houses, adding that they currently face eviction.
“Russia is a very hostile country in terms of weather and other things. It is very embarrassing and difficult to cope. Nigerian students are now living at the mercy of other African scholarship students like Ghana, Zimbabwe and all that. They lend money to us, so Nigerian students are like beggars. They’re begging, if one has to use that word. It’s as bad; begging other students from African countries. It’s demoralizing.
“We also have to bring up the issue of accommodation. The agreement in its raw form provides accommodation for students, but unfortunately some of the host countries do not honour this agreement. Students are made to pay for accommodation, but they’re unable to pay for the accommodation, because their stipends and remittances for at least six months have not been paid. As I speak to you now, students are going to be evicted from their hostels because they cannot pay for the accommodation,” he said.
“We have the issue of medical insurance. Because the allowances for all these have not been remitted, students are also going to be evicted, because you cannot stay in somebody’s hostel if you’re not medically certified,” he said.
He said that they had written several letters to see the Nigerian ambassador to Russia in order to have a one-on-one interaction with him on their plight but in vain.
“With due respect, this is the worst form of scholarship obtainable from Nigeria when you take a look at scholarship programmes such as the PTDF, NUC Presidential Scholarship, TETfund, NDDC, ITF and even state scholarship programmes. The irony of the whole situation is that students are sent to one of the most expensive places in the world with the worst welfare package,” he said.
Chairman of the committee, Rep Abike Dabiri-Erewa (ACN, Lagos) assured that the House would do everything within its reach to unravel the matter in order to help the students.
“It is shameful that Nigerian students that are sent on scholarship to other countries have resorted to begging. It is really a sad commentary. You don’t deserve this kind of treatment. We should be ashamed that this is happening. How can you be good ambassadors if you’re treated this way?
“We are going to do our work. We’ll meet with the ministry of education and the relevant stakeholders and find out what the real situation is. We will get back to you when we finish our findings” she said.
